올해로 제5회를 맞이하는 태화강국제설치미술제는 태화강변의 둔치공원에서 열리며 9개국의 29여명이 독립/팀을 이루어 참여하게 된다. "플러스"라는 주제로 예술이 자연 그리고 시민과 더불어 호흡하는 것을 보여주고자 한 이번 전시의 목표는 다음과 같다.

하나, 태화강설치예술제의 근본적인 과제인 '공공미술' 또는 '환경미술'의 특성을 살려 기존의 미술관과 비엔날레가 갖는 '엘리트주의'를 넘어 지역주민과 소통할 수 있는 친근한 미술행사를 지향한다.

 

둘째, 설치된 작품이 미술관이나 전시장에서 특정계층의 관람객을 기다리는 것이 아니라, 울산 시민들이 부대끼며 사는 태화강 주변의 현장의 공공 장소에 그들의 눈높이에 맞는 예술작품을 설치하여 이를 통해 태화강을 찾는 일반시민들에게 그들이 살아가고 있는 환경과 주변에 대한 화두를 던진다. 

 

 셋째, 태화강미술제가 갖는 지역적, 지리적 특성을 고려하여, 초청된 작가들이 일정기간 태화강 주변에 머물며 태화강의 역사와 상황 속에서 자신의 화두를 찾아내고, 어떤 작업을 어디에 설치할 것인지 스스로 결정하고자 한다.

결국 이번 태화강설치미술제는 전시 성격에 맞춰 특정 작품을 빌려와 전시하는 기존의 전시의 틀에서 벗어나 지역과 지역주민과의 호흡을 중요시 하는 공공미술, 환경미술이 될 것을 목표로 한다. 설치된 작업은 장소 특정적인 작업으로 울산시 태화강의 지리적 여건, 환경, 역사 등을 고려한 세상의 유일무이한 작업으로 진정한 설치예술을 보여줄 것이다. ■ 류희정

This year's Fifth Taehwa-river International Installation Art Festival takes place at Taehwa-riverside park; twenty nine artists, some work independently and in groups out of nine countries participate in this festival. As our theme is "PLUS," the festival wants art to embrace the harmony between people and nature. Our aim and objectives can be summarized as follows: 

 

 First, we aim to have an art festival that encompasses the fundamental project to present 'public art' or 'environment art and also overcomes the idea of 'elitism' that usual gallery or biennale embraces through approaching people in more familiar environment.

 

Secondly, the setting of this festival doesn't involve passive structure where usual exhibition's works are waiting for the audience to come and look. However, this festival around the Taehwa-riverside involves live interaction with Woolsan citizens that they can just view the works of the artists when they pass by the public places so that they can question themselves about their environmental surroundings.

 

Thirdly, we allowed all the invited artists to decide where to install their works freely in consideration of the local and geographical characteristics of this Taehwa-riverside and its history after staying for a certain amount of time near Taehwa riverside.

 

Ultimately, this Taehwa-riverside Installation Art Festival breaks away from usual exhibition's frame and rather aims to focus on working in harmony of public/environment art with its local citizens. These installation works are site-specific; so, this installation festival is unique in a way that it only focuses on Woolsan city Taehwa-river's geographical conditions, environment and history. ■ RYU Hee Jung
