Playful Whim PART.2

헤드비갤러리는 2026년 3월 4일부터 4월 4일까지 박세연·황승현 2인전 《Playful Whim PART.2》를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 지난해 현대백화점 전시 《Playful Whim》의 연장선에서 기획된 두 번째 이야기로, 개인의 내면과 관계 속에서 형성되는 감정의 흐름을 더욱 깊이 있게 확장한다.

《Playful Whim PART.2》는 장난스럽고 즉흥적인 감각에서 출발한 작은 용기와 다정한 시선이, 서로를 이해하고 보듬는 태도로 이어지는 과정을 담아낸다. 가면과 가시, 용기와 사랑, 상처와 희망은 하나의 큐브처럼 맞물리며 새로운 서사를 만들어낸다. 서로 다른 조각들이 모여 하나의 형태를 이루듯, 전시는 다름 속에서 함께 성장하는 관계의 풍경을 시각화한다.

박세연은 ‘가면’을 통해 자아와 감정, 성장의 과정을 탐구한다. 

작품 속 가면은 현실을 살아가기 위해 선택한 또 하나의 자아이자 내면을 지키는 보호막이다. 가면을 마주하는 과정은 곧 자신을 이해하는 과정이다. 가면을 쓰고 벗는 선택을 통해, 어떤 모습이든 그 아래에는 변함없는 ‘나’가 존재함을 말한다.

작품 속 캐릭터들은 완성된 존재가 아닌, 성장해 가는 우리의 모습을 닮아 있다. 어린 시절의 기억과 감정에서 출발한 이들은 작가의 내면을 투영한 존재로, 상처와 불안을 안고 살아가는 현실 속에서도 귀엽고 당당한 모습으로 앞으로 나아갈 수 있는 용기를 전한다. 가면 시리즈와 동물 시리즈의 캐릭터들은 히어로처럼 “나는 용감해”라고 말하며, 서로를 응원하는 존재로 나타난다.

박세연의 작업은 자신을 이해하고 받아들이기 위한 가면에 대한 이야기이다. 작품은 오늘을 살아가는 우리에게 조용하지만 단단한 위로와 용기를 전한다.

황승현은 ‘가시’를 통해 관계와 사랑의 본질을 탐구한다. 

작품 속 선인장은 친구이자 가족이며, 동시에 자기 자신을 상징하는 존재이다. 사람마다 서로 다른 가시를 품고 있듯, 각자는 저마다의 상처와 성향을 지닌 채 살아간다.

작가는 누군가를 안아주는 마음에서 작업을 시작한다. 사랑은 따뜻해 보이지만, 그 이면에는 서로의 가시에 찔리는 순간이 존재한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 안아주는 선택을 통해, 관계의 진심을 따뜻한 시선으로 풀어낸다.

작품은 사막이라는 공간에 빗대어, 서로 다른 가시를 지닌 존재들이 함께 살아가는 세계를 그려낸다. ‘종이’라는 재료는 부드러움과 날카로움을 동시에 지닌 인간의 모습을 닮아 있다.

황승현의 선인장은 말한다. “따갑지만 괜찮아.”작가는 서로의 다름을 안아주는 용기와 사랑의 의미를 담아낸다.

《Playful Whim PART.2》는 두 작가가 이어온 감정의 기록이자, 함께 구축해 온 관계의 서사이다. 이번 전시는 관람객이 자신의 감정과 리듬을 돌아보고, 관계 속에서 발견하는 작은 용기를 마주하는 시간을 제안한다. 놀이처럼 시작된 이 여정은 오늘을 살아가는 우리에게 따뜻한 위로와 단단한 힘으로 남을 것이다.

Playful Whim PART.2 presents the process by which a small courage and a gentle gaze—born from playful spontaneity—develop into an attitude of understanding and embracing one another. Masks and thorns, courage and love, wounds and hope interlock like the facets of a cube, generating a renewed narrative. As distinct fragments converge to form a single structure, the exhibition visualizes a landscape of relationships that grow together through difference. Conceived as the second chapter following last year’s Playful Whim, it further expands the emotional currents shaped within the individual and through relationships.

Park Seyeon explores selfhood, emotion, and growth through the motif of the mask. In her work, the mask is another self chosen to navigate reality, while also serving as a protective layer that safeguards the inner being. Confronting the mask becomes a process of understanding oneself. Through the act of wearing and removing it, the work suggests that regardless of outward appearance, an unchanging self remains beneath. The characters in her compositions are not fixed or complete; rather, they resemble ourselves in the midst of becoming. Emerging from memories and emotions rooted in childhood, they project the artist’s inner world and convey the courage to move forward—adorable yet assured—even while carrying wounds and anxieties within lived reality. The characters in the Mask and Animal series appear like heroes, declaring “I am brave,” and standing as presences that encourage one another.

Hwang Seunghyun investigates the essence of relationships and love through the motif of the thorn. In his work, the cactus symbolizes a friend, a family member, and at times the self. Just as each person bears different thorns, every individual lives bearing singular wounds and dispositions. The artist begins from the gesture of embracing another. Love may appear warm, yet it inevitably entails moments of being pricked by one another’s thorns. Nevertheless, through the choice to embrace, he unfolds the sincerity of relationships with a warm and attentive gaze. By invoking the desert as a metaphorical space, the work portrays a world in which beings marked by different thorns coexist. The material of paper—embodying both softness and sharpness—mirrors the dual nature of the human condition. His cactus declares, “It may sting, but it’s okay.” In doing so, the artist conveys the courage to embrace difference and the meaning of love.

Playful Whim PART.2 stands as a record of emotions the two artists have continued to build and as a narrative of the relationships they have constructed together. The exhibition invites viewers to reflect upon their own emotions and rhythms, and to encounter the small courage discovered within relationships. What began in play remains as a warm consolation and a steadfast strength in contemporary life.
