낮과 밤, 그리고 무지개-오키나와의 비밀의 숲 

눈에 보이지 않지만 분명 존재하는 자연의 기운은 특별하다. 여행을 다니면서 만나는 나무, 산, 강, 비, 바다가 각각의 색깔을 띤 에너지를 나누어 준다. 그리고 나는 그 에너지를 다시 그림으로 그려내고, 그렇게 자연과 이야기를 나눈다. 

일본의 남쪽 끝, 오키나와에서 만난 자연은 눈부신 밟음과 새까만 어두움을 동시에 가지고 있는 듯 보인다. 강렬한 태양은 땅을 전부 태워버릴 기세로 내리쬐지만, 쑥쑥 자라나는 나무와 숲은 마치 “더 세게!” 라고 외치는 듯이 하늘을 향해 뻗어 올라간다. 나는 공원과 숲을 산책하면서 그들이 자라는 소리에 귀를 기울인다. 

숲은 활발하고 여유 있는 이곳의 사람들처럼 생기 있다. 하지만 안쪽으로 들어가면 어느 순간 새까만 어둠의 공간이 펼쳐진다. 산책을 즐기던 나는 길을 잃은 채 숲의 커다란 구멍으로 빨려 들어가는 듯한 공포를 느끼기도 한다.

열대 식물의 성장속도는 두려울 정도로 빠르기에, 그 풍요로움에 충분히 감동할 겨를도 없이 숲의 폭풍 속으로 흡수되어 버린다. 

나는 이전에 느끼지 못했던 자연을 열대의 섬에서 새롭게 발견한다. 그리고 밝음과 어두움을 동시에 지니고 있는 이곳의 풍경을 그린다. 아름다운 섬의 곳곳에 전쟁의 상처가, 생명이 시작되는 바다와 숲의 한 쪽에 죽은 자를 위한 금지된 공간이 있다. 자연에도, 또 그 속에서 살아가는 사람들의 삶에도, 양면이 함께 존재하기 때문에 더욱 강하고 아름답게 느껴진다. 

섬의 어딘가에 내가 들어갈 수 없는, 누군가의 숨겨진 낙원이 존재하지 않을까 상상해 본다. 그곳은 아름답지만 두렵기도 하고, 수많은 나무의 주인들이 숨어있기도 하다. 먹구름이 뒤덮은 오후 3시엔 낮인지 밤인지 알 수 없는 이상한 풍경이 펼쳐지고, 땅이 뿜어 내는 에너지는 무지개가 되어 사방으로 뻗어간다. ■ 최지현

Day, Night and a Rainbow-Secret Forest of Okinawa 
There is a vibrancy of nature, which is invisible but definitely exists. It is special. The trees, mountains, rivers, rain and seas I encounter as I travel share their energy, each with unique colors. I paint that energy into paintings, which is how I communicate with nature. 
The nature I met in the southern end of Japan, Okinawa, seems to have a brilliant brightness and a deep darkness at the same time. The intense sun shines down as if it would burn the entire earth, but the rapidly-growing trees and forest reach up higher and higher toward the sky, as if they were shouting “bring it on!” I listen to the sound of their growth as I walk in the park and woods. 
The forest is full of life like the active and relaxed people that live here. But when I advance further into the forest, suddenly a deep-black space of darkness unfolds.

I, who had been enjoying a walk, feel terror that I might get lost and be sucked into a giant hole in the woods. Since the speed of growth of tropical plants is frighteningly fast, I am absorbed into the storm of the forest, without even enough time to fully appreciate its abundance. 

I newly discover nature that I was previously unable to feel in an island of the tropics. I paint the landscapes which carry the light and dark at the same time. In various spots in this beautiful island there are scars of the war, the ocean in which life begins, and a forbidden space for the dead on one side of the forest. It feels even more powerful and beautiful because there are two sides coexisting in nature, and in the lives of people who live within nature. 
I imagine that perhaps there is someone’s hidden paradise somewhere in the island where I cannot go. It is a beautiful but frightening place, where the owners of numerous trees are hiding. At 3 p.m. a strange landscapes unfolds covered with black clouds so that it is impossible to tell if it is day or night, and the energy emitted by the earth becomes a rainbow, reaching out in all directions. ■ Namu Choi
