평소와 같은 매일이라도

우리는 때로 거대하고 눈부신 삶의 순간만을 가치 있다고 믿곤 합니다. 그러나 한 인간의 서사를 가만히 들여다보면, 나를 구성하는 대부분의 요소는 눈에 띄지 않는 아주 작고 평범한 하루들로 채워져 있습니다. 스쳐 지나가는 찰나의 시선, 사소한 고민, 그리고 매일 반복되는 무수한 걸음들. 유현 작가의 개인전 <우리은하>는 바로 이 별볼일 없어 보이는 순간들이 모여 마침내 하나의 반짝이는 우주를 이루는 평범한 우리를 다룹니다.

조경을 전공하고 공간과 사물, 그리고 인간의 삶이 맺는 관계를 지속적으로 탐구해 온 유현 작가는 삶의 내면을 사유하며 물질의 본성에 다가가는 작업을 이어왔습니다. 작가의 시선은 현실을 있는 그대로 재현하는 데 머물지 않고, 재료 본연의 물성과 시적 대화를 나누며 유기적인 형태를 생성해 냅니다.

이번 전시에서 작가는 주목할 만한 매체적 전환을 선보입니다. 그간 조각 작업의 주요 소재였던 목재는 존재감만큼이나 무게와 부피, 보관과 이동이라는 현실적 제약을 동반했습니다. 작가는 이러한 물질적 한계를 벗어나기 위해 와이어라는 새로운 매체를 끌어들입니다. 유동적으로 변형되고 가벼우면서도 강한 유연성을 지닌 와이어는, 작가의 조각적 언어를 한층 더 자유롭고 가변적인 공간으로 확장시킵니다.

와이어가 그리는 '점'과 '선'은 이번 전시의 핵심적인 비유입니다. 단독으로 존재할 때 하나의 작은 점이나 얇은 선은 지극히 미약해 보입니다. 그러나 그 점들이 연결되고 선들이 허공을 가르며 중첩될 때, 작품은 물리적 무게감을 뛰어넘어 깊은 서사를 품은 입체적 형태로 변모합니다.

이는 곧 우리 삶의 초상입니다. 나를 이루는 무수한 일상의 순간들이 한데 엮여 비로소 커다란 형태를 이루듯, 허공에 띄워진 와이어의 구조체들은 '우리'라는 개개인이 품고 있는 아름다운 우주, 즉 ‘우리은하’의 형상을 조용히 비춥니다.

유현 작가는 본인과 관람객들에게 질문합니다.

"나를 구성하는 평범한 순간들을 우리는 과연 어떤 마음으로 대하고 있었는가?"

공간을 가로지르는 얇은 와이어의 궤적을 따라 거닐며, 관객들이 타인의 거대한 빛에 매몰되기보다 스스로를 이루고 있는 지극히 소중한 일상의 점과 선들을 따뜻하게 어루만지는 시간이 되기를 기대합니다.

Even on an Ordinary Day

We are often inclined to believe that only life’s grand and dazzling moments are worthy of significance. Yet when we quietly reflect upon the narrative of a single life, we find that most of what shapes us consists of countless small, unremarkable days. A fleeting glance, a passing worry, and the innumerable steps repeated each day— these seemingly insignificant moments quietly accumulate. You Hyeon’s solo exhibition, , turns its attention to these ordinary lives, revealing how such modest moments ultimately gather to form a luminous universe of their own.

Having studied landscape architecture, You Hyeon has long explored the relationships between space, objects, and human life. Through an ongoing contemplation of the inner landscape of existence, the artist seeks to approach the essential nature of materials themselves. Rather than merely reproducing reality, You Hyeon engages in a poetic dialogue with the inherent qualities of each material, allowing organic forms to emerge through the process.

In this exhibition, the artist presents a notable shift in material practice. Wood, the primary medium of earlier sculptural works, possesses a powerful physical presence but is inevitably accompanied by practical constraints of weight, volume, storage, and transportation. Seeking to move beyond these material limitations, You Hyeon introduces wire as a new sculptural medium. Lightweight yet resilient, flexible yet enduring, wire enables the artist’s sculptural language to expand into a more fluid and adaptable spatial dimension.

The "points" and "lines" traced by wire serve as the exhibition’s central metaphor. A single point or a slender line may appear fragile and inconsequential on its own. Yet as points connect and lines intersect across space, the work transcends its physical lightness, transforming into three-dimensional forms that carry profound narratives.

In many ways, this mirrors our own lives. Just as countless ordinary moments intertwine to shape who we are, these suspended wire structures quietly illuminate the beautiful universe each of us carries within—a *Milky Way* that belongs to all of us.

You Hyeon poses a simple yet profound question to both the artist and the viewer:

“How have I truly regarded the ordinary moments that make me who am I?”

As visitors follow the delicate trajectories of wire weaving through the gallery space, it is our hope that they will find themselves gently embracing the precious points and lines of their own everyday lives, rather than becoming consumed by the brilliance of others.
