갤러리, 할인 매장으로 탈바꿈하다

작가 이종섭은 갤러리 전관을 가상의 브랜드 'ZOLO-B Store'의 할인 매장으로 바꾼다. 관객은 전시를 관람하는 것이 아니라 매장을 둘러본다. 마음에 드는 옷을 고르고, 사이즈를 재보고, 계산대 대신 작품 앞에 선다.

작가에게 지난 시대의 창작물은 보존되기보다 순환되어야 하는 것이다. 재고를 덜어내야 그 자리에 신상품이 들어오듯, 지난 작업을 비워내야 다음 창작이 가능해진다. 할인은 가치를 낮추는 행위가 아니라 다음 창작을 위한 공간 확보다. 옷이라는 개념과 이질적인 철과 종이를 재료로 삼아, 통상적인 '의복'의 이미지와 기능에 균열을 내면서 관객에게 '비움과 갱신'이라는 태도를 건넨다.

할인, 비움과 갱신

우리는 옷을 통해 나를 표현하는 일상적 경험을 공유한다. 본 전시는 의류 매장을 은유한 전시장이다. 관객들은 평상시 쇼핑을 하듯 둘러보면서 마음에 드는 옷을 고르고, 눈길을 끄는 것에 다가간다. 전시장에 예술을 암시하는 전문적 언어는 없다. 모두 매장에서 쓰는 일상 언어로 되어 있다. 작가의 소소한 이야기들은 옷을 만든 디자이너의 이야기가 되고, 전시작품에는 신상품과 재고상품이라는 이름이 붙어 신작과 구작이 구분된다. 재고상품은 빨리 덜어내야 그 자리에 신상품을 채울 수 있다.

과거의 창작물은 보존되기보다 순환되어야 한다. 할인은 가치를 낮추는 행위가 아니라 다음 창작을 위한 공간을 확보하는 수단이고, 비워진 진열대는 결핍이 아니라 다음 신상을 예고하는 가능성이다. 본 전시는 또 한 번 변신하기 위한 139일간의 리얼한 흔적들을 격식 없이 보여주는 '떨이 행사장'이 된다. 옷이라는 개념과 이질적인 철과 종이 등의 재료로 통상적인 '의복'의 이미지와 기능에 균열을 내면서, 관객에게 새로운 인식의 전환을 유도한다.

자유로운 모습, 진솔한 이야기의 현장

이종섭은 철을 산소로 자르고 용접하며, 전통 서예에서 비롯된 필력으로 평면의 선을 입체 공간으로 확장하는 공간 드로잉 방식의 조형 언어를 구현해 왔다. 무엇에도 쉽게 길들여지지 않는 캐릭터 'ZOLO-B'의 몸짓과 표정을 통해 내면의 솔직한 순간들을 드러내고, 관객에게 '원래의 나'로 돌아가 보라는 질문을 건넨다. 이번 전시는 옷의 구속에서 벗어난 개인의 등장을 다룬 2022년 <OPEN RUN 10 COLLECTION>에 이은 두 번째 시리즈로, 또 한 번의 변신을 준비하며 보낸 139일의 흔적들을 격식 없이 펼쳐 놓는다.

A Gallery Transformed into a Discount Store

Artist Lee Jong Sub transforms the CN gallery into the discount outlet of a fictional brand, ZOLO-B Store. Rather than viewing an exhibition, visitors find themselves wandering through a retail space. They browse for garments, check their sizes, and instead of approaching a checkout counter, they come face to face with the artworks themselves.

For the artist, creations from the past are not meant to be preserved indefinitely but to remain in circulation. Just as clearing out old inventory makes room for new arrivals, making space by letting go of previous works is what enables the next act of creation. In this sense, a discount is not an act of devaluation but a means of securing space for what is yet to come.

Working with iron and paper—materials fundamentally at odds with the conventional notion of clothing—Lee disrupts both the familiar image and function of garments. Through this deliberate dissonance, the exhibition invites viewers to embrace an attitude of emptiness and renewal, where release becomes the condition for continual creation.

Discounting: Emptying and Renewal

We all share the everyday experience of expressing ourselves through what we wear. This exhibition presents the gallery as a metaphorical clothing store. Visitors move through the space as they would while shopping, browsing the racks, selecting garments that appeal to them, and gravitating toward what catches their eye.

The gallery is stripped of the specialized language that typically signals an art exhibition. Instead, every label and description adopts the familiar language of retail. The artist's personal anecdotes become the stories of a fashion designer, while the works themselves are categorized as New Arrivals or Clearance Items, distinguishing recent works from earlier ones.

Clearance items must be moved out to make room for new arrivals. Likewise, for the artist, making space by releasing past works is an essential condition for future creation. Here, discounting does not signify a loss of value, but an act of clearing space—an ongoing process of emptying and renewal.

This exhibition becomes a clearance sale—an unceremonious presentation of the tangible traces accumulated over 139 days of preparing for yet another transformation. Working with materials such as iron and paper, whose materiality stands in stark contrast to the very idea of clothing, the artist fractures the familiar image and function of the garment, inviting viewers to reconsider their assumptions and experience a shift in perception.

A Space for Unfiltered Presence and Honest Stories

Lee Jong Sub has developed a sculptural language of spatial drawing, cutting and welding iron while extending the expressive force of lines—rooted in the gestural tradition of Korean calligraphy—into three-dimensional space. Through the gestures and facial expressions of ZOLO-B, a character that resists easy conformity, the artist reveals candid moments of his inner self and invites viewers to ask themselves what it means to return to their authentic selves.

This exhibition is the second installment following OPEN RUN 10 COLLECTION (2022), which explored the emergence of the individual liberated from the constraints of clothing. Here, Lee Jong Sub presents, without pretense or ceremony, the traces accumulated over 139 days spent preparing for yet another transformation.
