'이원희의 풍경을 바라보는 일'

전시를 준비하며 이원희 작가의 그림을 오래 바라보고 있으면, 문득 마음이 조용해지는 순간이 있습니다. 

처음에는 화면 안의 산세와 물길, 바위와 숲의 표정이 눈에 들어오지만, 시간이 조금 지나면 그보다 더 깊은 어떤 기운이 천천히 전해져 옵니다. 그것은 단순히 자연을 잘 그려낸 회화적 성취만으로 설명되기 어려운, 오랜 시간 자연을 마주해온 사람만이 가질 수 있는 태도와 시선일 것입니다.

이원희의 풍경은 자연을 닮은 그림이면서도, 결국 자연을 대하는 한 인간의 마음을 보여줍니다. 작가는 오랫동안 전국의 산하를 직접 걸으며 자연의 결을 눈과 몸으로 익혀왔고, 그렇게 마주한 시간들을 화면 위에 차곡차곡 쌓아왔습니다. 그래서 그의 그림은 눈앞의 경치를 옮겨놓은 이미지라기보다, 한 장소와 오래 머물며 느꼈던 공기와 빛, 침묵과 숨결까지 함께 품고 있는 세계처럼 다가옵니다.

이번 전시의 제목인 <진경: 세상의 모든 풍경>은 우리 회화사에서 중요한 의미를 지닌 ‘진경’이라는 말에서 출발합니다. 

하지만 이 전시에서 말하는 진경은 단지 실제 풍경을 사실적으로 옮겨 그린다는 뜻에 머무르지 않습니다. 오히려 그것은 눈으로 본 자연을 넘어, 자연 안에서 느끼고 받아들인 존재의 깊이까지 담아내려는 마음에 가깝습니다. 이원희 작가의 그림이 특별하게 느껴지는 이유도 바로 그 지점에 있다고 생각합니다. 그의 풍경은 정확하고 치밀하지만 차갑지 않고, 깊고 장엄하지만 결코 과장되지 않습니다. 화면에는 늘 절제와 따뜻함이 함께 머물러 있습니다.

저는 이원희 작가의 풍경 앞에 설 때마다, 우리가 얼마나 오랫동안 ‘바라보는 일’ 자체를 잊고 지냈는지를 새삼 떠올리게 됩니다. 너무 많은 이미지와 장면들이 빠르게 지나가는 시대 안에서, 우리는 풍경조차 잠시 소비하고 지나쳐버리기 쉽습니다. 

그러나 그의 그림은 그렇게 서둘러 지나가는 시선을 붙잡아둡니다. 조금 더 천천히 보라고, 조금 더 오래 머물러보라고, 그리고 그 안에서 각자의 마음이 반응하는 소리를 들어보라고 말하는 듯합니다.

그의 붓질은 때로는 묵직하게 쌓이며 시간의 두께를 보여주고, 때로는 바람결처럼 가볍고 섬세하게 화면을 스쳐갑니다. 

그렇게 형성된 풍경은 고정된 장면이라기보다 살아 있는 감각에 가깝습니다. 빛은 머물지 않고 흐르고, 산은 침묵 속에서도 자신의 존재를 드러내며, 물과 숲은 화면 안에서 조용히 호흡합니다. 그 앞에 서 있는 우리는 어느새 풍경을 ‘본다’기보다, 풍경 안에 잠시 마음을 놓아두게 됩니다.

이번 전시를 준비하며 저는 이 풍경들이 단지 아름다운 자연의 모습만을 보여주는 것이 아니라고 느꼈습니다. 

그것은 오히려 우리가 잊고 지냈던 평온, 쉽게 지나쳐버렸던 침묵, 그리고 마음 깊은 곳에서 오래 기다리고 있던 고요를 다시 떠올리게 합니다. 어쩌면 좋은 풍경이란 바깥의 장면을 보여주는 것이 아니라, 그 풍경을 바라보는 사람 안에 또 하나의 풍경을 조용히 일깨우는 것인지도 모르겠습니다.

갤러리 제이원에서 선보이는 이번 전시가 각자의 걸음을 잠시 늦추고, 자연을 바라보는 마음과 자신의 내면을 함께 돌아보는 시간이 되기를 바랍니다. 이원희의 풍경이 전하는 깊고도 따뜻한 울림이, 이곳을 찾는 모든 분들의 마음속에 오래 남기를 바랍니다.

Jingyeong: All the Landscapes of the World

As I prepare this exhibition and spend time looking closely at Lee Wonhee’s paintings, there are moments when my mind suddenly grows quiet. At first, what comes into view are the mountain ridges, flowing water, rocks, and the presence of forests within the frame. Yet, as time passes, something deeper begins to emerge, slowly making itself felt. It is difficult to account for this solely in terms of painterly accomplishment or the skill with which nature is rendered. Rather, it seems to arise from an attitude and way of seeing that only someone who has long lived in close encounter with nature could possess.

Lee Wonhee’s landscapes resemble nature, yet what they ultimately reveal is the mind of a person in relation to it. For many years, the artist has walked the mountains and landscapes of Korea, learning the textures of nature with both eye and body, and carefully building those encounters, layer by layer, onto the canvas. For this reason, his paintings feel less like images that simply reproduce the scenery before one’s eyes than like worlds that hold the air, light, silence, and breath he experienced while lingering in a particular place.

The title of this exhibition, Jingyeong: All the Landscapes of the World, begins with the term jingyeong, a word of particular significance in the history of Korean painting. Yet the jingyeong invoked here does not simply refer to the realistic rendering of an actual landscape. Rather, it points to an attempt to convey not only the natural world as seen by the eye, but also the depth of being felt and received within it. I believe this is precisely what makes Lee Wonhee’s paintings so distinctive. His landscapes are precise and meticulous, yet never cold; profound and monumental, yet never overstated. Restraint and warmth always reside together within his paintings.

Whenever I stand before Lee Wonhee’s landscapes, I am reminded of how long we have neglected the very act of looking. In an age when countless images and scenes pass by at great speed, even landscapes are easily consumed and just as easily left behind. Yet his paintings arrest that hurried gaze. They seem to ask us to look more slowly, to remain a little longer, and to listen to the stirrings of our own hearts in response.

At times, his brushwork accumulates with weight, revealing the density of time; at others, it moves lightly and delicately across the surface like a passing current of wind. The landscapes formed in this way feel less like fixed scenes than like living sensations. Light does not remain still, but flows; mountains assert their presence even in silence; water and forests breathe quietly within the frame. Standing before them, we find ourselves no longer simply looking at a landscape, but resting our minds within it for a moment.

As I prepared this exhibition, I felt that these landscapes do not merely present beautiful views of nature. Rather, they recall the peace we had forgotten, the silence we have too easily passed by, and the stillness that has long been waiting deep within the heart. Perhaps a true landscape is not one that simply shows an external scene, but one that quietly awakens another landscape within the person who beholds it.

I hope that this exhibition at Gallery J.ONE offers each visitor a moment to slow their pace and reflect both on the mind with which we look at nature and on their own inner world. May the deep and gentle resonance conveyed by Lee Wonhee’s landscapes remain for a long time in the hearts of all who visit.
