공성환 개인전 《파문》이 갤러리 제이원 서울지점에서 열린다. 갤러리 제이원이 서울에 삼청동에 진출한 이후 9번째로 맞이하는 전시이다.
공성환의 화면에서 물은 맑고 투명하게 드러나지만, 결코 완전히 붙잡을 수 없는 대상이다. 물속의 돌은 선명하게 모습을 드러내면서도 수면의 흔들림에 따라 달리 보이고, 파문은 생성되는 순간부터 서서히 사라져간다. 물이 표현의 대상이라는 것은 단순한 재현하는 기술에 머물지 않는다. 빛과 바람, 주변 환경에 따라 시시각각 달라지는 물의 모습을 포착하기 위해서는 오랜 관찰과 기다림이 필요하다. 공성환은 그 사이의 떨림, 선명함과 흐릿함이 맞닿는 순간을 섬세하게 붙잡는다. 그의 그림은 사실적 묘사라기 보다, 그의 감각과 사유를 거쳐 나온 추상이다. 수면 위에 내려앉은 빛은 잘게 떨리고, 물결은 보이지 않는 숨결처럼 번져나가며, 투명한 깊이 속의 형상들은 드러나는 듯 다시 멀어진다. 작가는 이 미세한 변화의 순간들을 오래 바라보며, 자연의 풍경을 하나의 감각으로 옮겨낸다.
공성환 작가가 말하는 ‘추상’은 형상이 사라진다는 의미의 추상이 아니라, 눈앞의 물을 오래 바라보는 과정에서 현실의 구체성이 감각과 리듬, 빛과 떨림으로 전환되는 상태에 가깝다. 공성환에게 물을 그린다는 것은 대상을 설명하는 일이 아니라, 눈앞의 세계가 감각으로 해체되고 다시 회화로 응집되는 순간을 붙잡는 일이다. 그의 화면에서 추상은 형상의 부재가 아니라, 형상이 흔들리며 다른 감각으로 넘어가는 과정이다. 그러므로 공성환의 물은 사실적으로 보이지만, 그 안에서 조용히 추상으로 흐른다. 그것은 보이는 것의 끝에서 시작되는 또 하나의 풍경이며, 물의 표면을 빌려 드러나는 내면의 파문이다.

In KONG Sung hwan’s paintings, water appears clear and transparent, yet it can never be fully grasped. Stones beneath the surface emerge distinctly, only to shift with the movement of the water, while ripples begin to fade from the very moment they are formed. To paint water, then, is not merely to reproduce what is seen. Because water changes from moment to moment according to light, wind, and its surroundings, capturing it requires sustained observation and patient attention. KONG delicately holds the fleeting moment where clarity and blur meet.
His paintings are less realistic depictions than abstractions shaped through sensation and thought. Light resting on the surface of the water trembles in fine fragments; waves spread like an invisible breath; and forms within the transparent depth seem to appear, then slowly recede. By observing these subtle transformations, the artist translates natural scenery into a field of sensation.
The “abstraction” KONG Sung hwan speaks of is not one in which form disappears. Rather, it is a state in which the concrete reality before the eye is transformed, through the act of looking at water, into sensation, rhythm, light, and vibration. For KONG, painting water is not about explaining an object, but about capturing the moment when the visible world dissolves into sensation and gathers again as painting. In his work, abstraction is not the absence of form, but the process by which form trembles, shifts, and moves into another realm of perception. Thus, KONG Sung hwan’s water may appear realistic, yet within it, it quietly flows toward abstraction. It is another landscape that begins at the edge of the visible—an inner ripple revealed through the surface of water.
