허무를 알면서도 창조를 멈추지 않는 것. 어쩌면 인간이라는 존재의 가장 아름다운 모순 아닐까. 알베르 카뮈가 '우리는 시지프를 행복한 인간으로 상상해야 한다.'고 했듯, 인간은 결국 또다시 바위를 밀어 올리는 존재다. 의미가 남지 않아도, 결과가 보장되지 않더라도 스스로 선택하고 행동하는 순간 자유롭다.

김성엽 작가는 그 반복되는 창조의 의지를 모래성이라는 이미지로 풀어낸다. 무너질 모래성을 세우고, 길을 내고, 이야기를 불러들인다. 중요한 것은 오래 남는 결과가 아니라 자신의 세계를 만들어내는 과정이다. 작가는 어린 시절 놀이의 기억 속에 숨어 있는 인간의 가장 오래된 본능을 바라본다.

수많은 점을 찍어 화면 위 모래를 쌓아 올린다. 수행과도 같은 행위를 통해 성이 되고, 풍경이 되고, 세계가 된다. 누구나 한 번쯤 경험했던 놀이의 기억을 불러냄과 동시에 삶의 은유로 확장된다. 무너질 운명은 쌓는 행위의 가치를 지우지 못한다. 화면 속 레고인형과 거북이들은 모험을 떠나고, 잊힌 순수한 꿈과 가능성의 감각을 다시 일깨운다.

전시 제목인 <Sand Garden>은 서로 다른 두 개념의 결합이다. 모래는 가장 쉽게 흩어지는 물질이며, 정원은 끊임없는 돌봄과 시간을 필요로 하는 공간이다. 그러나 이 둘은 결국 같은 방향으로 수렴한다. 사라질 것을 알면서도 우리는 왜 만들고, 가꾸고, 꿈꾸는가.

전시는 질문에 명확한 답을 단정하지 않는다. 대신 한 점 한 점 쌓인 모래의 시간을 통해 말한다. 비록 형태는 사라질지라도, 무언가를 만들기 위해 들인 시간과 마음은 사라지지 않고, 다음 세계를 향한 밑거름이 된다고.

To continue creating despite an awareness of futility—this may be the most beautiful paradox of being human. As Albert Camus wrote, 'One must imagine Sisyphus happy.' We are, ultimately, beings who return to push the boulder uphill once more. Even when no meaning remains and no outcome is guaranteed, we become free the moment we choose to act.

Kim Seongyup expresses this recurring creative impulse through the image of the sandcastle. He builds castles destined to collapse, carves out paths, and invites stories to unfold. What matters is not what endures, but the process of creating a world of one's own. Within childhood memories of play, the artist discovers one of humanity's oldest instincts.

Patiently placing countless dots, Kim accumulates grains of sand across the canvas. Through this meditative process, the grains of sand gradually become castles, landscapes, and entire worlds. Evoking memories of play shared by us all, the imagery expands into a metaphor for life itself. The inevitability of collapse never diminishes the value of the act of building. Lego figures and turtles set off on their adventures, reawakening forgotten dreams and a sense of pure possibility.

The exhibition title, Sand Garden, brings together two seemingly opposing ideas. Sand is among the most fragile of materials, while a garden is a place sustained through constant care and the passage of time. Yet they ultimately point toward the same question: Why do we continue to build, cultivate, and dream, knowing that everything is destined to disappear?

The exhibition offers no definitive answer. Instead, it speaks through the time accumulated in every grain of sand. Though forms may disappear, the time and devotion invested in their making endure, laying the foundation for the world yet to come.
