최영주-신과의 대화 Choi Young Joo - Talk, As Universe

최영주 작가는 삶의 고통과 치유, 그리고 깨달음의 여정을 작품에 담아내는 화가다. 홍익대학교 미술대학에서 수학한 그는 1970년대 대한민국 미술전람회 수상을 시작으로, 한국과 미국, 유럽, 중남미 등 세계 각지에서 활발히 활동해왔다.

1990년대 미국 로스앤젤레스로 활동 무대를 옮긴 그는 회화뿐 아니라 빌보드 프로젝트, 멀티미디어 아트 등 다양한 시도를 통해 사회와 인간 내면에 대한 메시지를 전했다. 특히 1993년 캘리포니아에서 진행한 〈Absolute Hope〉 빌보드 프로젝트는 도시 한가운데 예술적 희망의 이미지를 새긴 상징적인 작업으로 평가받는다.

2001년부터 시작된 깊은 명상 수행과 2011년의 ‘자아 소멸(ego death)’ 체험은 그의 예술 세계를 근본적으로 바꾸어 놓았다. 병과 상실, 그리고 명상의 시간을 거치며 그는 존재의 본질과 영적 자유를 주제로 한 회화 작업에 몰두하게 되었고, 그 속에서 색과 형상은 단순한 시각 언어를 넘어 내면의 울림과 초월의 경험을 전하는 매개가 되었다.

최영주의 작품은 추상적이면서도 강한 생명력을 품고 있으며, 고통과 희망, 물질과 비물질, 현실과 초월 사이의 경계를 유영한다. 그는 예술을 통해 궁극적으로 “존재의 참된 자리로 돌아가는 길”을 제시한다.

Choi Young Joo is a painter whose work embodies a journey through pain, healing, and spiritual awakening. Educated at Hong-Ik University’s College of Fine Art in Seoul, she began her career in the 1970s with awards from the National Art Exhibition of Korea, and has since exhibited extensively across Korea, the United States, Europe, and Latin America.

In the early 1990s, Choi relocated to Los Angeles, where she expanded her practice beyond painting to include billboard projects and multimedia art, delivering messages about society and the human condition. Her 1993 Absolute Hope billboard in California, installed at the heart of the city, became a symbolic work that projected an image of hope into the urban landscape.

Since 2001, Choi’s intensive meditation practice — culminating in an ego death experience in 2011 — has profoundly transformed her art. Through illness, loss, and years of spiritual discipline, she has devoted herself to paintings that explore the essence of existence and the freedom of the soul. In her hands, color and form transcend visual language to become vessels of inner resonance and transcendental experience.

Choi’s works are abstract yet imbued with a vital energy, drifting between pain and hope, material and immaterial, the real and the transcendent. Through her art, she offers a path back to the true place of being.
